Law Enforcement Bike Ride - 9/3/05This is the 3rd Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Bike Ride from the Golden Isles to the Oldest City. Police escorted ride from Brunswick, Georgia to St. Augustine, Florida, in honor and tribute of all law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, the giving of their lives in the performance of their duties. On Friday, Sept.2, 2005 at 6:30pm, there will be a 50's theme Cookout at Salvador's Deli, 205 Gloucester Street, downtown Brunswick. This cookout is to assist in raising money for the cause. The restaurant does not receive any of the proceeds. Dinner plates are $10.00 per person. There will be music, dancing, and a prize awarded to the best 50's dressed single and couple. An evening bike ride around town after the cookout is being considered. Discount motel rates will be available for those arriving in Brunswick the day before (Sept. 2nd) the ride. The Hampton Inn, Brunswick, 230 Warren Mason Blvd. (912-261-0002), is offering a reduced rate of $69.00 plus tax for the nights of Sept 2-4, 2005. This is an excellent rate considering it's the Labor Day weekend. For discount rate indicate the Brunswick Police Department's bike event. There will be a police escort provided from the motel in Brunswick to the staging area at Mary Ross Park the morning of the 3rd (Saturday). On Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, riders will meet up at Mary Ross Park, downtown Brunswick at 1000 hrs. We will leave Brunswick by 1100 hrs, direct route to St. Augustine where drawings for prizes / 50-50 will be done. Riders will have the option of eating lunch at one restaurant as a group or going their separate ways to do so. The host motel in St. Augustine is the Monterey Inn (904-824-4482) located directly on the bay front. The owner/manager is an avid biker. Discount rate at the Monterey Inn is $89.00 per night with a two (2) night minimum. Most staying overnight will lodge here although there are other motels in the area in which a minimum stay is not required. Be sure to mention the name of the event for the discounted rate. Some will ride back the day of the ride (3rd), some the following day (4th)
and still others on Labor Day (5th) via A1A, although no police escort will
be provided. Special daily events for participants of the ride (depending
on how long they stay in St. Augustine) are being formalized at this time.

Although online maps are great for getting you there, they normally give you the major (highway) routes. There's nothing like taking off for the country roads, smelling the cow shit or whatever natural scents are in the area, checking out the scenery and absorbing the fresh air that only country roads seem to provide. If you plan an extended stay near the Law Enforcement Bike Ride there just might be some interesting side trips you could take.
